- Minimum age looks to be 4 years of age. If you have children 3 years and younger then they are not allowed. This applies to us.
- It is about 900 miles from southern California. Depending on how fast you drive and your gas mileage, this would be about 16 hours of driving maybe spread over 2 days with about 2 or 3 potty stops each of those days and 36 gallons of gas just to get there.

People of all ages are welcome in the main cave, Carlsbad Cavern, at Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Inside the cave, there are two miles of paved trail that you may walk self-guided - the Natural Entrance and Big Room. The Natural Entrance route requires a steep descent of about 800 feet and is not recommended for anyone with difficulties, such as with knees, back, or breathing. The Big Room is the most famous part of the cave and may be entered by the walk down the Natural Entrance and the elevator. Everyone leaves the cave by elevator. There are a variety of guided tours with age restrictions; the youngest of which is 4 years old. Although most of the Big Room is wheelchair accessible with assistance, baby strollers are not allowed in the cave. Many families carry their small children in baby backpacks. Hope you'll consider a visit to the Caverns, if not now when the children are small perhaps when they're older. A great experience for families is the Left Hand Tunnel adventure tour. Everyone on the tour must be at least six years old, but it's great fun to follow the guide into a dark cave passage, walking a dirt trail, and carrying your light source - a candle lantern -- like reliving moments in history! Happy Trails!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update and clarification Carlsbad.
ReplyDeleteWe do look forward to visiting the Caverns at some point. It will be a couple of years before our littlest will be 4 years old. I also look forward to taking some pictures of our family's outing there and adding them to my photoblog (see link on right column). It'll be at least 4 years from now to take that Left Hand Tunnel tour, but that looks great too!
